Completing missions, also known as Neoquest Missions,
is an OPTIONAL way to experience
a FURTHER level of immersion at our event.
It’s free for all attendees and participants.
no experience is necessary, and it’s easy to dive in.
But as long as you’re going to go on a mission for us,
you might as well know some of the story.
rules and guidelines are farther down this page.
Here’s an official glossary of terms to get you familiar with this fictional world.
THE STORY SO FAR…
Neotropolis exists 200 years in the future. The planetary system is in disputed galactic territory and is therefore not under any direct control from a galactic government (such as Earth’s). Neotropolis is actually a city, and not the name of the planet itself; the planet’s name is Kepler-609c. But as it’s the only center of habitation on the planet, everyone calls it Neotropolis.
Kepler-609c is located within the Cygnus constellation and is part of the Cygnus Federation of Systems, a loose, independent galactic organization whose motto, “Libertas - Occasio” (Liberty & Opportunity), well-describes our frontier planet.
Neotropolis began as a dirt-poor trading outpost in a less-trafficked corner of the galaxy.
That is, until the discovery of PROMETHIUM.
This extremely rare and valuable element exists in trace amounts within the planet’s soil and atmosphere. Metallic Promethium is silver in color and its radioactivity makes it luminesce with a pale blue glow, hence its name among the locals - “Blue Silver."
Difficult to extract, it is valuable enough that Neotropolis became of interest to some of the most powerful entities in the galaxy. Corporations naturally moved in. But there are also many people that came to the planet to make their fortune as individuals, or simply to get far away from the “civilized” parts of the galaxy…
Who really controls Neotropolis? Well, some of that may be up to YOU.
The NeoQuest Missions you complete for your Allegiance can shift the balance of power.
Participants have the opportunity to join an Allegiance and enjoy immersive missions each day from 12 noon to 6pm (with some select “after hours” missions taking place at night) and each night, a theatrical event will take place on the main drag around 7:30pm that reveals more of the story and recaps some of the day’s adventures.

THE THREE ALLEGIANCES
Neotropolis, like the other parts of the far flung Cygnus constellation, has no official government of its own, nor military. Not OFFICIALLY anyway. The balance of power shifts continuously between three powerful institutions jockeying for control: Helix Industries, the rich and all-providing megacorp that supplies Kepler’s goods. Endline Solutions, the fiercely independent private security and mercenary guild offering freelance specialists for any kind of service, legal and otherwise. And Reboot Syndicate, a shadowy financial services corp (and perhaps a secret front for the Kepler resistance organization…)
Helix Industries is one of the most wealthy and powerful corporations in the entire galaxy, and the main corporate power in Neotropolis. Their influence over our current world is hard to overstate, given that they build everything from starships to the artificial organs that your grandmother needs to stay alive. Most of the company’s power and money is in other parts of the galaxy, in more profitable systems, but they have recently put significant development into their Neotropolis organization.
Endline Solutions is the galaxy’s premiere private security firm, and the home to the Intergalactic Mercenary Guild. No longer content to be merely guns-for-hire, Endline is Neo’s best-organization of "specialists." Unified by their professional code,” Endline represents the best of the best of the best. Not only bounty hunters, they have among their ranks everything from hackers, to hitmen, to hairdressers. Troubleshooters for any type of trouble, and if they keep the credits coming, no job is too dirty.
For now, the rivalry between Endline and Helix has played out in dark corners, with neither side wanting to declare open war and bring in possible influence (and reinforcements) from off-planet.
But these two established titans are not the only power on Neo. A LOCAL corp is making waves too…
The official corporate logo of Reboot Syndicate
Reboot Syndicate. Reboot Syndicate is ostensibly a financial services corp focused on debt consolidation, loans, workers pensions, and “creative” investments… but many believe it is nothing more than a legal front for the Neotropolis Resistance, using the galaxy’s broad corporate protection statutes (such as the Corporate Privacy and Preservation Act of 2089) to hide their activities. Or has the radical Kepler Resistance suddenly gone legit?
Rumors of less above-board financial “services” by Reboot abound, including money laundering for criminal organizations. And customers who have lost funds due to “risky investments” may have, in fact, had their credits skimmed off to fund resistance causes and/or pockets. Still, for those who have reasons to avoid more traditional financial institutions, the Reboot Syndicate seems to be servicing a need.
The resistance logo as it is often seen as graffiti on the streets of Neotropolis.

These are the main forces that are pitted against each other in this small outpost at the edge of space. They will compete for resources (such as Promethium) and influence, building up their followers, their NeoCredits, and their power to stand out as the clear controller of Neotropolis.
As the rest of the galaxy starts to turn their eyes to this once-forgotten planet, the future of Neotropolis could be prosperous, or disastrous.
Only one thing is for certain…conflict.
PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS
These are not Allegiances or corporations but they help keep the city running (or just make it more interesting to live in):
Kepler Sky Control - The technicians who keep all the ships in our airways and spaceways from running into one another. It’s best not to bother them if you see them working at their screens.
Tech Sector (aka “Tec Sec”) - Applied sciences. These are the independent, academic-minded scientists who have come to the planet to study (mostly promethium and its uses) and are above local politics and infighting. And they don’t seem to care much about money, either. Which most people find strange.
Neotropolis News Network (N3) - The planet’s local news channel. N3’s news team recently won the Cygnus Excellence In Journalism prize. They also made up that award.
Laser Combat League - A popular multi-system sports league that includes laser tag matches and disc combat. Gambling is legal, common, and sometimes rigged.
The Sentinels - An independent security team that is not alligned or owned by any Allegiance. These “peacekeepers” do their best to enforce some version of law and order in Neotropolis. Their services are sometimes available to the highest bidder and their loyalties are not always clear. Some of the members of the Sentinels are true believers, while some are just conscripts forced to join up to pay off corporate debts.
[Behind-the-scenes note: These actors are your fellow attendees, and while they’re happy to play the enemy or your ally- as the scenario needs- they are there to help you immerse yourself in this world and have a good time.
It’s fine to play, but please don’t scream in their faces or become unnecessarily aggressive with them. That’s not fun for anybody. You can read more about that below in the “rules” section.]
That’s just a taste of the story/lore behind Neotropolis. But how does it actually work for YOU, an attendee?
Well, the first thing to know is you can just enjoy the event as a campout / party / festival. There is no requirement to be “in character,” to choose an Allegiance, or go on any NeoQuest Missions. Costumes for all attendees ARE required, of course, regardless of your other levels of participations.
For those that DO want to get more involved with the story and role-playing aspects of Neotropolis, a whole other level of immersion will open up to you by choosing and pledging to an Allegiance.
Allegiances are an OPTIONAL starting point for your immersive experience. There are plenty of interactions and missions (some of them created by Factions) that ANYONE at the event can try out. But having an Allegiance opens up a LOT more in terms of interactivity. Most of the “official” missions that our staff create are specifically for those that have pledged to an Allegiance.
HOW TO JOIN AN ALLEGIANCE?
Simple- when you arrive AT THE EVENT (it can’t be done before), report to the Command Center to get your complimentary NeoBand (more on that below), and then head to one of three Allegiance headquarters. These will be marked on the official event map, and event staff in the Command Center can also direct you. The three headquarters modules are not staffed 24/7, but you should often find an Allegiance leader there during the regular hours of noon-6pm who can sign you up.
Allegiance FAQ
YOU MAY ONLY PLEDGE TO ONE ALLEGIANCE.
YOUR ALLEGIANCE MAY NOT CHANGE DURING THE EVENT.
You may try out a beginner / low-level mission for any of the allegiances, (or even all three) but once you get your Allegiance PATCH (necessary for doing higher-level missions and participating in official Allegiance meetings etc.) you must stick with that Allegiance for the duration of that year’s event). If you decide you want to join a different Allegiance (and get their patch), you can do that another year. Each Allegiance has a limited number of members that can sign up, and once that number is reached, you will need to sign up for one of the other Allegiances (this is to make sure the number of members doesn’t get really skewed, with one having more than another).
CAN I PICK ANY ALLEGIANCE I WANT?
(Assuming they still have room when I sign up?) Yes. It doesn’t matter what Faction you are with, or what kind of character you are trying to represent, you can be in any of the Allegiances. For example, you’re a hacker? Guess what? The corporation, the para-military, and the resistance all have hackers working for them. Likewise, there’s nothing that says a corporate-type character couldn’t be on the side of the resistance.
DO I NEED TO HAVE A COSTUME THAT FITS WITH MY ALLEGIANCE?
No. It’s definitely cool if you decide you want to, though. Again, any type of character and theme-appropriate costume for the event can be part of any of the Allegiances. But it definitely could enhance the whole experience if many Allegiance members fit in thematically to what they’re representing (bounty hunter and paramilitary outfits for Endline Allegiance and sophisticated suit-wearers working for Helix, etc.)
WHAT ABOUT FACTIONS?
Factions are groups of people who choose to enjoy the event together and create a camp / headquarters / interactive space. Many Factions are placed inside the fully-theme-required zone, but some are not. Being in a Faction and being part of an Allegiance are two separate things. An entire Faction’s membership could decide that they all want to be in the same Allegiance (and this is fine, depending how much space the Allegiance has for membership), but there’s nothing preventing individual Faction members from being in different opposing Allegiances (though this could get awkward at your next Faction Thanksgiving dinner…)
MY FACTION WANTS TO CREATE/PARTICIPATE IN MISSIONS!
That’s great! Factions in our Theme Zones can absolutely be part of some of the official stories and missions we are creating, and also create their own missions. We do outreach to Faction leadership in the lead up to the event, so consult the head(s) of your faction if you have any questions.
DOES IT MATTER WHICH ALLEGIANCE I CHOOSE
Yes and no. It will change your storyline and your missions, and it may change certain other perks (like which Allegiance patch you get, for starters) but we try and keep the experience comparable in terms of number of missions available, etc.. While some Faction locations (clubs, bars, etc.) may decide to do some small events or gatherings just for one Allegiance, we ask them not to exclude any Allegiances during most of their usual open hours. The idea is for Allegiance memberships to always be a bonus, never a negative for your enjoyment of the event.
OH YEAH, PATCHES
Each Allegiance has a specific logo they use. And you get a free Allegiance-specific symbol patch when you’ve completed at least one critical aka higher level mission for your Allegiance (critical missions are more important and will be assigned to you after you’ve completed one or more beginner missions for your Allegiance leader). Your Allegiance patch is more than just a souvenir, it’s a “key” of sorts, opening up more critical missions and even perks within the city. For just one example, there are certain bars that may have special drinks that are ONLY available to patch holders, (and yes, there will be non-alcoholic versions).
WHAT KIND OF MISSIONS WOULD THESE BE? I’VE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS
There are a wide variety of tasks you might be asked to perform, either solo, or as a group. There could be some puzzles to solve (escape room-style), packages to deliver (like unstable power cores), deals to make where you are sent to find an undercover operative (exchanging passwords in a dark alley type of thing), or even hacking a computer terminal to steal credits from another Faction.
CAN I USE AN ALLEGIANCE LOGO AND PUT IT ON SOMETHING MYSELF?
(Paint it on a jacket, your car, display it at your camp, etc.)
Yes, but with some restrictions. We ask that you NOT put your Allegiance logo on anything until your membership in that Allegiance is confirmed by the Allegiance leader. Wouldn’t you feel dumb if you got a full-face Helix tattoo only to find out their membership was full? That said, do not use Allegiance logos or variations of them on items you are going to sell, barter, or give away to others.
It really should just be for your own personal use in association with enjoying the event. Like painting it on a jacket, putting it on computer screens at your all-Resistance member outpost, etc..
CAN I HIDE MY ALLEGIANCE?
Once you have an Allegiance patch (or you might get a temporary tattoo!), we prefer you show it off in some way, and always make it clear at the start of a mission who you are working for. It’s kind of on the honor system, but it will really enhance the enjoyment of everyone at the event. Believe us, there will be plenty of clandestine and secret stuff going on (not to mention double-crossing) without anyone changing Allegiances or hiding who they are allied with. Allegiances will not change during the event, but that doesn’t mean the leaders of the Allegiance might not make some side deals with one of the other Allegiances (and then change up that alliance later). In fact, we are sure they will. So while your Allegiance will not change during the event, your working relationship with the other two Allegiances very likely WILL be changing from time to time…

RULES FOR
OFFICIAL ALLEGIANCE MISSIONS
and QUESTS
We have some simple guidelines in order to ensure the NEOQuest missions aspects of the event run as smoothly as possible. Failure to comply with any of these rules, whether or not attendees are aware of them, can lead to expulsion from the event with no refund. (We’ve outlined the rules in a downloadable/printable PDF here.)
THE NEOBAND
This RFID-enabled silicone wristband is your ticket to unlocking new levels of immersive missions!
Stop by the Command Center during the event to get yours. Wearing this wristband tells others you’re ready to engage in more of the mission/live-gaming aspects.
You MUST have a NeoBand to engage in ALLEGIANCE MISSIONS, the official missions at the event that relate to the main storyline.
IF YOU RECEIVED A NEOBAND DURING A PREVIOUS EVENT, BRING IT TO THE NEXT EVENT!
The NeoBand RFID silicone wristband is yours to keep! Please bring it back with you to future events (you might want to label it with your name in case you drop it). Look for areas where you can try out the RFID function. The NeoBand designates you as someone who is interested in experiencing all of the mission features that Neotropolis has to offer.
The NeoBand is not required for unofficial Faction-generated missions.
The NeoBand IS required to participate in any NEOQuest or Allegiance missions.
(Allegiance missions are the official ones for our event and often connect with the main story line).
WE currently HAVE FOUR OFFICIAL GAMING / MISSION SYMBOLS:
You can use these for stickers, painted on items, or other placement. You cannot use them for items you intent to sell, barter, or give away. And obviously, don’t add these to any item that isn’t yours.
1. HACKABLE
This indicates you can try to hack whatever the item is (monitor, computer, LED light, etc.) Hacking ANY item not marked with this symbol can result in expulsion.
2. RFID INTERACTIVE
Try placing your NeoBand near this symbol to unlock some interactivity!
3. MISSION ITEM
This indicates something that is essential to a particular mission. Please do not touch it, move it, or interact with it unless you’re sure it relates to a mission you are currently on.
4. INTERACTIVE ITEM
Touch, manipulate, or otherwise engage with this item! (Could be anything from a computer keyboard you can type on to a puzzle to solve). These are not necessarily mission-related. This is different than a hackable item. Some items may include more than one of the above symbols. Example: computer terminal that you can type on, but also try to hack, could have both symbols.
EMERGENCIES AND IMPORTANT
REAL-WORLD INFORMATION
There may be times when it is necessary for staff, actors, or attendees to make it clear that what is being said is NOT part of any LARP or mission. At those rare moments, a person can make a “time out” symbol and actually say “Time Out” while talking to you. They will hold their hands in the “time out” T-shape (if possible). Once it is ok to resume, they will stop holding the “T” with their hands, and the action/scene/story can continue.
OPT OUT OF A SITUATION
If you are ever interacting with an actor or role-playing attendee, or taking part in a story segment or mission where you feel uncomfortable for any reason or do not want to participate, you can cross both arms in front of your chest, making an “X” symbol and hold that position. That tells the other person that you are opting out of whatever this is. If you are unable to make this “X” pose, you can alternatively say the words “opt out.”
At that point, you should also step away from the current scene or situation so it can continue on without you.
OTHER RULES:
Do not touch any actors without consent. This includes The Sentinels.
Obviously, you also shouldn’t touch any of your fellow attendees without consent, and no, LARPING or roleplay is not an excuse for nonconsensual touching. All of our event rules apply.
Please obey any sign or label that reads “Staff Only,” “Closed,” or “Authorized Personnel Only,” and do not enter those areas.
The Medical Tent, the Event Safety (Security) Tent, and the areas immediately adjacent to them are off-limits for all LARPing and mission activities. Likewise, staff members and volunteers from those departments will not engage with any LARP-related activities while on duty. The Core, our Main Stage area, is also off-limits for missions.
NO RUNNING. This may seem like a strange rule for a big event that is partly open desert, but hear us out: Neotropolis includes crowded spaces, dimly lit areas (especially at night), vehicular traffic, drinking, and, most importantly, people in various costumes that can inhibit their movement or vision. Running is a bad idea. None of our missions are designed to require running.
Questions about these rules prior to the event should be directed to:
Questions about them during the event should be directed to your Allegiance leaders.
